Claybirds

Introducing a regular article following the activities of a group of potters who wish to be known as the "Claybirds"

Capital Clay 2009

Wellington, April 17 - 19 2009

Sponsorship Announcement

We are very happy to be able to announce our wonderful sponsorship for the prizes of the 50th National Exhibition.  We felt the 50th was a suitable milestone to offer some worthwhile prizes. Pottery or ceramic art, whatever you like to call it, has certainly come of age, and it is commendable that NZSP has grown from that first NZ Studio Potters Exhibition in 1957, and has managed to keep National exhibitions going on a nearly annual basis (or a few counting mistakes along the way)

......

Reserve this date! It is the weekend after Easter.

Wellington is a vibrant city and we are planning to give you a Capital Experience! All our venues are within easy walking distance of each other.

What’s on offer:

The Convention:

At Rutherford House, a Victoria University Venue – right next door to the railway/bus station.

Demonstrations, slides, discussions/forums, trade stalls, food, the AGM, networking, potters’ Olympics, friends, surprises.

......

Download your registration form now.

Please note there is an early bird discount for NZP members and one for non members. After the 31st of January, everyone pays the same.  Everyone registering before then will go into the draw for 1 lucky person to have their registration fee refunded.  It is sheer bribery to get you to enrol as soon as possible!

Calling all Members

National ceramic exhibitions, hosted by various branches of New Zealand Potters Inc. have been held on a regular basis since 1957. In April 2009, NZP will be staging Capital Clay - the annual convention and 50th national exhibition in Wellington. To celebrate this milestone, the Museum of Wellington will host a retrospective exhibition which looks back at the various national exhibitions and the ceramic scene since the early pioneering days.

The Museum of Wellington would like to ask NZP for help in supplying the following items for the exhibition:

  • photographs of NZP members/events/previous exhibition installations
  • film or good quality video footage of workshops etc
  • interesting letters, posters, brochures, diagrammes etc

If you have something of interest that you would be willing to lend  - either to scan or to include in the exhibition please contact Jaqui Knowles, Exhibition Developer/Public Programmes: Jaqui.Knowles@wmt.org.nz or telephone on (04) 496 1944

Photographing Your Work by Eleanor Howick

Many national exhibitions now select pieces from an initial submission of digital photos. Here are a few tips from Eleanor Howick on how to take good photos of your work easily and reasonably cheaply. As well as submissions for exhibitions and competitions, its  great to have good quality photos for a portfolio, for your member's page on the NZ Potters' website and for exhibition catalogues

Event Reports
George Kojis at Turangi

The first time I heard of George Kojis was in 2005 when I visited Waiariki Institute of Technology in Rotorua….. when George Andrews was tutor of the Craft Design Course.

George Kojis had just finished a 3-week tutorial. He was gone, but his work was there; exhibited in the polytech’s gallery. Platters textured with bubbles, with glazes
reflecting the green and blue vibrant waters of Rotorua’s lakes. Students were  ‘buzzing’ about the influence he had had on their work.

Employment - opportunity

The Wellington Potters Association (WPA) has established a separate studio space for use by a Potter in Residence and applications by letter or e-mail are now called for from recognised potters/ceramists at solo exhibition level. e l

Wellington Potters Supplies - alive and well in Wellington

Beryl and Brian Buchanan owned Wellington Potters Supplies in Khandallah for over 20 years, supplying local and not so local potters with both materials and lots of advice.

After Brian’s death, Beryl continued to manage the shop on her own for another year or so. It was exhausting work.  Wanting to sell, she resisted several offers from people who wanted to take the business out of town because of her loyalty to the local customers.

And then along came Warren and Kate Fransham.
