Tips for Using This Website

Welcome to our online booklist. Our entire catalog is here for your perusal and I hope you’ll take advantage of everything we have to offer.

  • Our web site has no shopping cart feature so to order (see above) please e mail, phone, fax, or snail mail it in.
  • There is also no built in search engine. To find items please use your browser’s "find" function. Hold down the "apple" or "control" key and type the letter "f" for most web browsers and a little box will pop up that allows you type in a keyword to search for. I have found Firefox to be the best browser to use with this site but all browsers will work fine. Unless you are certain of the exact title (including spelling and punctuation) or author of a book or video, search by a familiar keyword. For example, if you search for “kiln”, every book and video with the word “kiln” in either the title or description will be found one at a time. This way you will be sure to find the book you are looking for.
  • It is very impractical to print out the catalog directly from this site as it will come to something like a billion pages. If you would like a printed copy of our catalogue, please call, email, or fax us. If you just want to print a few titles, I suggest that you "cut and paste" what you want to print into a Microsoft Word document and print from there.
  • Other than our tools, there are no photos on this website. We will eventually put some up. Thanks for your patience.
  • Our titles are arranged alphabetically by title within specific categories and you will see all of them listed as links in the sidebar to the right. You can quickly go to any of these sections by clicking on it. After you finish looking through that section use your "back" button to return to this home page.

Karen Mahoney, staff

It is written simple enough to feel confident in every step that you do. A great starter book for crystalline glazes. Not overwhelming with technical info, just enough basics to help you succeed, even on the first try

Sarah Whitlock, staff

New Arrivals

Looking for something shiny and new to add to your library? New books and films arrive here on a regular basis! These are the latest arrivals of books, videos, and tools.

New Books:

Carolina Clay: The Life and Legend of Slave Potter Dave -TODD 26.00
This book was created through research to form a historic biography. Dave was the only known slave to sign his pots, a dangerous thing to have done as it showed his literacy. His large forms were often decorated with poems and through studying these for biographical clues along with public records Leonard Todd was able to piece together this figures life. An interesting look into life and art at that time.

Electric Firing: Creative Techniques- TURNER p30.0
0
Part of the Ceramic Arts Handbook Series. This book included information on materials and glazes for the electric kiln, and even some maintenance tips. Have an old electric kiln gathering dust? Use this book to make it into a gas one. Lots of great ideas and tips.

Glazes and Glazing: Finishing Techniques- TURNER p30.00
Another book from the Ceramic Arts Handbook Series. Enough tips to help you dip, pour, spray, paint, and layer your glazes with success. Includes recipes also.

Clay Connections- HINSHAW p. 19.00
This is a small book, but it is filled with great ideas. Most of these projects find ways to tie the creative process in with other lessons being learned in the classroom. When talking about Egypt, why not make a small mummy and coffin? How about making a small aquarium castle for the classroom fish between biology lessons? Making sundials when learning about the sun and planets is another great option. This book has more focus on ideas than actual step-by-step how to's. Although there is some basic info about the ceramic process, most of the pages are dedicated to projects rather than technical info.

Colour in Clay- WALLER 55.00
Now back in print! 50 Artists from Europe and the USA that work with stained and colored clays are profiled. Work, methods, and techniques are presented. Full of beautiful color photos. A lovely book to learn from as well as study aesthetics.

Surface Decoration: Finishing Techniques- TURNER p 30.00
This is not your average decoration book and it contains some more advanced techniques. How about a relief plate with your photo on it? Not interested? Try a color photo on a pot! Then put dichroic glass on it! And some rolling stamp patterns! With a weathered patina finish! And some airbrushed underglazes! All over the texture of a sewer cover! So many possibilities. Another great title from the Ceramic Arts Handbook Series.

Extruder, Mold & Tile: Forming Techniques- TURNER p 30.00
From the Ceramic Arts Handbook Series, featuring 29 different techniques by various clay artists. Make flatter tiles in less time! Make new dies and an extruder table! Use a thrown pot still on the wheel head as a mold for another pot! Learn how to make perfect plaster! There are too many possibilities to mention, see for yourself!

Searching for Beauty: Letters from a Collector to a Studio Potter-JACOBS 40.00
This is a collection of letters in the form of a book. Written from collector Richard Jacobs to potter Christa Assad, this book is for a wide audience, reaching out beyond potters. It discusses the thoughts and ideas that so many of us have and articulates them in a way we cannot, speaking of society, aesthetics, philosophy and much more. Many inspirational words to keep you going.

Born of the Fire: The Life and Pottery of Margaret Tafoya- KING 45.00
The relatives of Tafoya helped make this book possible, as well as personal. They contributed with their own stories, interviews, and photos of pieces of Margaret's from their personal collections, unpublished until now. This book is a wonderful look into the life of this great Santa Clara potter, from where she came from, what she accomplished, and her legacy.

The Pottery of Zuni Pueblo-LANMON & HARLOW 150.00
This is an impressive book. With well over 500 pages this hardcover is the definitive book on Zuni. Every style and type of pot is included in chronological order and has over 1200 examples. As the dust jacket suggests, this book "sets the gold standard and will be indispensible". We couldn't agree more. This one is well worth the price tag.

Surface Design for Ceramics-MILLS 30.00
This book covers all the possibilities for surface decoration, and is filled with beautiful examples of techniques. Cord impressed, decals, sprigs, stamping, wax resist, monoprinting, carving, and many more ideas are covered here. A good book to open eyes to possibilities.

Plenty to keep kids active and interested in clay, while not letting them get discouraged by clay's difficulty.

Ceramics- A Lifelong Passion: Peter Siemssen Collection Foundation- ARNOLDSCHE 75.00
This is a very personal book. Peter Siemssen (collector, businessman, patron) discusses 50 artists from his collection. The 50, including Hamada, Rie, Fritsch, Shimaoka, Leach, and Odundo are broken down according to geographical locations. Each artist has a brief timeline of their life and work and a summary about the artist and his or her work. Along side the photos and biographies, Siemssen recalls the artists on a much more personal level. Memories of meeting the artist, why he felt that person was significant, acquiring pieces and so forth are thought out. Siemssen writes as if he is telling stories to good friends.

The Art of Chinese Ceramics- READER'S DIGEST EDITORS 30.00
This book is a large hardcover and is full of color photos of the collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing. Works are laid out in chronological order, starting with primitive work and continuing through the dynasties, and the information is historical with little technical info being mentioned. Imperial kilns and porcelain schools are also discussed. At well over 200 pages, this book is a deal at its price.

Studio Pottery: Twentieth Century British Ceramics in the Victoria and Albert Museum Collection-WATSON p 50.00
This book touches on many important figures of the movement, including Cooper, Rie, Leach, and Duckworth. A lengthy introduction discusses these works and their context in history. Large color photos fill about half of the book, while many smaller black and white photos fill the second half. A condensed biography of each artist is included along side plates of the work.

The Elephant and the Lotus: Vietnamese Ceramics in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston- TRUONG 85.00
A beautiful hardcover book that highlights over 200 pieces of the museums collection, the largest of its kind in North America. The book begins with an introduction including the significance of the works to the country, and how it was influenced by Chinese ceramics. Each individual piece also has the "how" and "why" explained. This stunning book would make a wonderful addition to your book case.

The Potter's Studio Handbook- MULLER p 25.00

Tea Ceramics Artist: Richard Milgrim, A Retrospective 60.00
Edited by Tomiko Hasegawa and published by Kodansha Japan, this is a luscious book that will both educate and inspire. Richard Milgrim is an American potter whose work enjoys the honor and distinction of being endorsed by the 15th Generation Grand Master Of Urasenke, Dr. Sen Genshitsu. In glorious color photos the book follows the career of Milgrim from his student days at Antioch college in 1977, through his apprenticeships in Japan, and on to his acceptance and success as a maker of tea ceremony vessels. His pots are beyond description and the full page photos bring the shapes, surfaces, and nuances of the artists touch to life. A collection of comments and essays complete the text which is presented in both Japanese and English. Whether or not you have a particular interest in teabowls this is a book not to be missed.

Havana Tile Designs- NAVARRO 20.00
A beautiful hardcover book in a small, comfortable size. Includes a CD-ROM of images contained in the pages. The book is nearly all images, but it does include a short introduction (in eight languages!) on the production of tiles in Havana. The images are boldly colored and designs show quite a bit of variety in styles. Complicated and delicate to organic to geometric. It won't take long for inspiration to strike after flipping through this one.

Barcelona Tile Designs- NAVARRO 20.00
Very similar to Havana Tile Designs. Same small comforting size, and includes a CD-ROM if all images included. The book begins with a very short intro of these hydraulic pressed tiles.
