Ultrasonic thermography for detection of cracks in ceramics

For conventional inspection systems it is very difficult to detect very small cracks. If they are beneath the surface of the object to be inspected it is not possible at all.

Thermographic inspection systems may offer a solution that is able to find these problematic cracks in different materials, developed by Ibea GmbH.

Sonotrode ultrasound is injected into the object. The ultrasound is spreading within the object which means that the positioning of the ultrasound injection is of no importance.

The vibrations generated within the object lead to frictional loss close to or next to cracks. The heat generated is captured via infrared camera which is why this technique allows for finding the smallest cracks even underneath a surface, in deeper layers.

In principle this technique is suitable for any type of material, however, materials with a low heat conduction coefficient lend themselves best for ultrasonic thermography.

Due to the short injection time of 100 ms this technique is very suitable for automated inspection. A production rate of up to 300 ppm is feasible.
