Laboratory Trials Before starting laboratory scale test work with a magnet, a feedstock specification should be selected. The specification should take into consideration the raw material and process variations. Only part of the story is told by the iron content obtained from the chemical composition as iron occurs in different states within the mineralogical make up of a kaolin feedstock. These iron contaminants can be split up into three main groups:1. Associated iron-bearing minerals such as mica, tourmaline, hematite, goethite, rutile, and magnetite. These are the easiest to separate out as they are either ferro or strongly para-magnetics.2. Iron bearing layered minerals such as smectites. These minerals are often associated with kaolinite and may occur in-between the lattice planes of the kaolinite stacks; these contaminants can be removed with a magnet, however care must be taken to avoid removing too much kaolinite along with the contaminants.3. Iron hydroxyls or iron staining on the surface of minerals such as kaolinite and feldspar. Where this type of iron occurs, the iron is very weakly magnetic and other process methods can be used. Layered minerals such as smectites can cause processing problems and affect the susceptibility of a kaolin to magnetic separation. Kaolins with problematic mineralogy can be difficult to disperse and, hence, the magnetic constituents may be hard to liberate from the feedstock. Physical properties such as the particle size distribution will affect the design and operation of a HGMS system. Variations in this property will affect the capacity and efficiency of the plant, as a feedstock with a coarse size distribution will create a rise in canister pressure
