American Museum of Ceramic Art
AMOCA is the only museum on the West Coast of the United States devoted exclusively to ceramic art and artists. We are located in an area abounding with ceramic history and with internationally recognized clay artists from the Arts and Crafts Movement, the 60's Clay Revolution, and the Studio Pottery Era.
Because pottery is the single most enduring indicator of civilization, AMOCA is able to use ceramic objects as teaching tools. We open the doors of the past through exhibitions of archeological finds; we trace ceramic advances by studying the construction, glazing and firing practices developed by early cultures, and we find clues to the social expression of certain time periods through the study of ceramic shapes, forms, and styles of decoration.
AMOCA's productions include solo shows of legendary ceramic artists; group exhibits; themed productions emphasizing a particular technique, object, or form; historic shows covering the changes and growth of ceramic trends; manufactured ceramics; world-wide ceramics; and explorations of the earliest-known ceramics such as are found in ancient Meso-America, China, or Japan.
