Annabel Faraday Ceramics

Annabel Faraday prints maps and images onto raw clay. She makes illustrated stoneware ceramics which explore a sense of place. This forceful and energetic work uses images collaged from her photographs of the urban landscape. Occasionally she has manipulated or embellished the original imagery. On the inner surfaces, Victorian maps locate the image source. Together, the surfaces explore the interplay of constraint and spontaneity, history and modernity. As a whole, the vessels are a celebration of the urban environment.

The 'lined' pots are made using photographic, painting, print-making and handbuilding techniques. Rather than applying transfers to a constructed vessel, Annabel uses a unique method, developed over many years, of printing onto raw clay.

After painting both sides of the flat clay sheets with coloured slips and over-printing the details, she hand-builds the vessels and fires to stoneware, producing a slightly raised metallic image which forms an integral part of the ceramic body. The vessel form retains a simplicity which provides a canvas for the richly textured surface imagery.

Annabel's powerful and unusual work has a growing following and is collected worldwide. She works from her studio in Hackney, East London, and welcomes commissions.
