Cher Shackleton
Wood firing pots has been a passion of mine for over 10 years. I began potting nearly 30 years ago in an adult education class and went on to formal study in New Zealand and in Perth Western Australia (WA.) where I now live. I have undertaken many workshops over the years and have promoted ceramics through out this time as president of Perth Potters Club and ond on the committee of the Ceramic Arts Association of Western Australia (CAAWA) one of the major events being the Edge Conference in 1999 which was an International event and enormously successful.
Wood firing in W.A. is seasonal due to our hot summers and low rain fall. After the first rain in May and fire permits aquired the wood fires here ( not many of us) stoke our kilns for many hours. I have built several experimental kilns and now fire a train kiln built recently. I am in the process of building a anagama. The rich lusious surfaces from the molten ash is what I am looking to achieve. I have recently experimented with soda and find this surface very desirable and will continue to work with this.I also fire with Stewart Scambler a very experience wood firer. He has a anagama kiln 90 minute drive north of Perth.
We fire this kiln 3 times a year for approximately 50 hours per firing. My studio is 300 from the beach and only 10 minutes from Fremantle it is by appointment but all are welcome.
