Brian Maranda

Studio potter producing wheel thrown stoneware utilitarian pieces. Born at Lithgow N.S.W in 1961 Maranda first experienced the joy of creating a wheel thrown pot at 7 years of age, being guided by a "second generation" potter who later became his formal instructor in a ceramics technical course.

He developed an interest in the craft of pottery as a child whose playground was around the various structures of the now demolished Lithgow Valley Pottery (1879 to 1973) and recalls his father earning a second income carting white clay from the rich deposits in the foot hills around Lithgow to Pates Pottery at Sydney.

Maranda now works from his own studio and fires with LP gas in a newly constructed 15 cubic foot single chamber down draught catenary arch kiln, using typically oriental glazes to adorn the wheel thrown pots which he prefers to think of as being "born not made", reflecting his appreciation for the beauty to be found in surviving examples of traditional 'folk' pottery which he has studied in several countries, developing a love of the simply honest forms of village pottery made for everyday use.
