John Mathieson
I discovered clay at evening classes in London, began teaching pottery and art at secondary level one year later, and have since taken a degree in ceramics. I now pot full-time, making individual pieces and some domestic ware in stoneware on a slow Leach kickwheel.
All my work is reduction fired to 1280 C. in a propane kiln using ash, tenmoku, talc and shino glazes, often over a low-temperature black slip. Recently I have experimented with porcelain, using a celadon glaze which crazes beautifully.
I have also worked extensively in slipware and raku - I am the author of 'Raku', published by A&C Black in their Ceramics Handbooks series. I want my work to continue to evolve, and for it to show the mark of the maker's hands. Beyond that it has to speak for itself.
