The porcelain of Sam Kelly is made for contemplation of the form. They are individually handcrafted using traditional practices and techniques of throwing and turning, brushwork, glazing and firing.
The lip and foot rings of Sam's porcelain forms is an exacting process which is of the highest quality, very labor intensive and can only be achieved by handcrafting on a potters wheel.
The decoration, if any, is created around what the individual form tells the artists to achieve effect or depth, complimenting the forms is accentuated by the high reduction fired glazes.
The glazes used are unique; the majority being a complex translucent celadon which when fired over porcelain clays becomes jewel-like. The copper red is a "glaze on glaze" technique requiring 3 individual glazes. These glazes were developed over a 5 year testing period as "signature glazes" by Sam for his porcelain pieces.
Inspiration of these ceramic works can be traced back to the Koryō dynasty in Korea, first half of 12th century.
