The Clay Centre, Shropshire
The Clay Centre is a mixed ceramics gallery, teaching and making space run by potter/teacher Alistair Gillies.
Trained in Ceramics at Dyfed College of Art in South Wales, Alistair worked in a number of South Wales potteries before being employed by West Wales Association for the Arts as a 'Potter in the Community' in Llandysul and this sparked an interest in teaching.
Alistair moved to Shropshire in 1983 to work as a supervisor running a training scheme workshop for the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust [as well as being a demonstrator of a number of crafts which included being filmed by Japanese television dipping candles.
Deciding to follow teaching through a more formal route Alistair upgraded his qualifications at Wolverhampton University with a BA [hons] in Printmaking and a Post Graduate teaching qualification and spent 17 years teaching Ceramics and Art in Shropshire schools. Feeling a need to return to his craft Alistair has opened The Clay Centre. This is a mixed teaching, making and gallery space situated in the heart of the Ironbridge Gorge.
With a gallery area that exhibits fine ceramics [emphasising the best from Shropshire], a working pottery where Alistair makes his extraordinary garden ceramics, as well as a teaching area, The Clay Centre brings together all of the skills of Alistair Gillies. So come and learn about clay from an experienced teacher and potter - adult and children classes, children's pottery parties and more.
View fine ceramics and see a working pottery in a craft centre that offerrs many other crafts in the Ironbridge Gorge the home of the Industrial Revolution.
